Chapter One: The Question That Won’t Go Away
Why "What am I here for?" haunts so many of us
The Quiet Ache Beneath the Surface
I
t often begins quietly. A flicker of restlessness on your morning commute. A hollow feeling that creeps in during a birthday party or family gathering, despite the laughter around you. A tension in your chest as Sunday evening rolls in and you realise that, once again, a new week is beginning, but nothing feels truly meaningful.
And then it comes, the question. What am I even doing with my life? Is this it? What am I here for?
If that question has ever haunted you, know this: you're not alone. In fact, you're in excellent company.
I've sat across from CEOs, teachers, parents, artists, and university students, all of whom have whispered this same question with equal vulnerability. It doesn't matter how much you've achieved, how polished your social media presence looks, or how stable your career path seems. This deep longing for purpose is universal.
It's not a sign that something's wrong with you. It's a sign that something important is trying to emerge.
And contrary to what we've been led to believe, discovering your purpose isn't about finding a magical job title, or waiting for a lightning bolt of clarity to strike. It's not even about fixing yourself or becoming someone else. It's about remembering who you are, unlearning what isn't yours, and growing into a life that feels true to your core.
The Myth of the One True Purpose
Let's start by addressing the elephant in the room: the myth of the "one true purpose."
From a young age, many of us were taught, explicitly or implicitly, that we each have a singular, pre-destined life purpose, like a hidden treasure we're meant to discover. We imagine there's some ultimate answer, one role, one calling, one mission, that will make everything click into place. Once we find it, we believe, the confusion will vanish, and our lives will be infused with meaning every single day.
It's a compelling narrative. But it's also deeply misleading and incredibly unhelpful.
Here's why: this myth places enormous pressure on us to "get it right." If we don't know what our purpose is, we assume we're failing or lost. If we try something and it doesn't light us up instantly, we assume it wasn't "the one." If we change direction later in life, we worry we've wasted time.
And worst of all, this mindset keeps us waiting, for a sign, a breakthrough, or some magical moment of clarity that may never come.
So, let's rewrite the story.
A Living Truth: Purpose Is Grown, Not Found
Here's what I've learned, personally and professionally, after decades of working in human development, psychology, and purpose coaching.
Purpose is not something you find. It's something you grow.
It's not fixed. It evolves. It's not a destination. It's a direction, a way of moving through the world that feels aligned, authentic, and alive.
Imagine your purpose not as a final job description, but as a tree. It begins as a seed: a tiny, often quiet sense of curiosity, contribution, or calling. With care, time, and attention, it begins to take root. You try things. You explore. You fail. You grow. Some seasons are full of fruit. Others are more about tending to the soil.
But all along, something within you is unfolding.
You don't "arrive" at purpose like you would a train station. You build a relationship with it through listening, acting, and aligning more deeply with your values, passions, and strengths.
And the beautiful part? You can begin growing it at any stage of life. You don't need perfect clarity. You just need willingness.
Why This Question Keeps Coming Back
So, why does this question, "What am I here for?", persist even in people with seemingly fulfilling lives?
Because our outer lives often race ahead of our inner lives.
We follow the scripts: do well in school, get a good job, earn money, find stability. These things are important, but they're often driven by survival or societal expectations, not inner truth.
Eventually, many of us reach a point where we've ticked all the boxes, but something still feels missing. That's when the deeper questions start bubbling up.
It's not a midlife crisis. It's not a sign of ungratefulness. It's a call to meaning.
You are not broken for asking these questions. In fact, they're a sign that you're awake, that your soul wants something more real, more aligned, more alive.
There's a term in psychology called "existential restlessness," and it describes exactly this state. It's the discomfort that arises when the gap between your outer life and your inner truth becomes too wide to ignore. It's uncomfortable, yes. But it's also profoundly intelligent. Your psyche is doing exactly what it's designed to do: calling you toward greater wholeness.
From External Success to Internal Alignment
Meet Sophie, a fictional composite of many real people I've worked with.
Sophie was 38, a successful marketing executive, married with two kids, living in a beautiful home just outside London. On the outside, she was thriving. But inside? She was quietly unravelling.
She dreaded Mondays. Her energy was constantly drained. She felt snappier with her family, more withdrawn at work, and vaguely guilty for not "loving" the life she'd built.
When we first spoke, she said: "I feel like I've built someone else's life, and now I'm trapped in it."
What Sophie was experiencing wasn't failure. It was disconnection. She had spent years becoming the person she was supposed to be, but she hadn't paused to ask if that version of success was truly hers.
Over time, through deep values work and purpose exploration (we'll do both later in this book), Sophie began shifting. She didn't quit her job immediately or move to the countryside. Instead, she began making small, aligned changes: volunteering with a cause she cared about, carving time for creative expression, and eventually pivoting her role into one that focused more on mentoring and mission-driven work.
Her life didn't flip overnight. But it felt entirely different, because it was finally rooted in truth.
Why You're Exactly Where You're Meant to Be
If you're reading this and feeling behind, uncertain, or like you "should have figured this out by now," please take this in.
You're not late. You're right on time.
In a world that glorifies instant clarity and overnight success, it's easy to feel like you've missed the boat. But the reality is, most people don't have a clean, linear path to purpose. They experiment, reflect, recalibrate. They take wrong turns. They circle back. They grow through trial and insight.
And often, it's the questions that shape us more than the answers.
This book isn't here to hand you a pre-packaged version of your life's meaning. That wouldn't honour your uniqueness. Instead, it's here to help you build your own map, one that aligns with who you really are and what truly matters to you.
We'll walk through confusion and clarity, false starts and real breakthroughs. You'll explore your past, tap into your strengths, face your fears, and start designing a life that feels both meaningful and sustainable.
Dr. Blake's Core Truth: Purpose Is Not a Lightning Bolt
If you're waiting for your purpose to hit you like a lightning bolt, clear, instant, and dazzling, you may wait forever.
But if you start to see purpose as a slow-growing flame, fed by attention, honesty, and courage, everything changes.
You'll stop waiting. You'll start creating.
You'll notice sparks in unexpected places. You'll become more attuned to your energy, your values, your joy. And slowly but surely, the path will reveal itself, not because it suddenly appeared, but because you started walking it.
Purpose doesn't announce itself with trumpets. It reveals itself in quiet moments of alignment, when what you're doing, who you're being, and what you believe all point in the same direction. Those moments might be fleeting at first. But the more you pay attention to them, the more frequent and lasting they become.
Your First Step: Embrace the Question
You don't have to answer, "What am I here for?" today. But you can start by honouring the question instead of fearing it.
What if it's not a burden, but a gift? A signal from your soul that you're ready for more? A doorway into deeper alignment, authenticity, and joy?
That's the invitation of this book. And it begins right now.
Try This: The Purpose Prompt
Take ten quiet minutes to write freely in response to this question:
"If I could do anything without fear, expectation, or limitation, just because it felt right, what would I do, be, or create?"
Don't edit. Don't overthink. Just explore.
You might not uncover your life's mission in this exercise, and that's okay. You're planting seeds. And we'll be watering them together over the next nineteen chapters.
If you find yourself staring at a blank page, try a second prompt: "What would the bravest version of me choose to do tomorrow morning?" Sometimes narrowing the timeframe unlocks what the bigger question can't.
Final Thought
You are not lost. You are not broken. You are on a journey back to yourself.
And while the road may not always be straight or clear, it will be yours, and that makes all the difference.
So, here's your call to action: keep asking. Keep listening. And most importantly, keep walking. Your purpose isn't waiting at the finish line. It's unfolding with every aligned step you take.
Let's begin.
Restlessness Is Not the Same as Ingratitude
One fear keeps people stuck longer than almost any other. They worry that wanting more means they're ungrateful for what they already have. So they swallow the restlessness, smile through the dinner parties, and tell themselves they should be satisfied. Wanting a deeper life feels almost rude when so much is already good.
Let's put that fear to rest. Gratitude and longing can live in the same heart at the same time. You can be deeply thankful for your health, your family, and your home, and still feel that something essential is calling you forward. These aren't opposites. They're companions. In fact, the people who feel the pull of purpose most strongly are often the ones who appreciate their lives the most, because they're paying attention.
The restlessness you feel isn't a complaint against your life. It's an invitation deeper into it. It's the part of you that knows you were built for more than comfort, more than safety, more than a pleasant routine. That part of you isn't broken or spoiled. It's awake.
So the next time the ache shows up at an odd moment, on a Sunday evening or in the quiet after everyone's gone to bed, try not to scold yourself for it. Thank it instead. It's pointing you somewhere. And the willingness to follow it, even a single step, is how every meaningful life begins.
The Cost of Pressing Snooze
There's a reason this question is called a wake-up call. Like any alarm, it can be silenced. You can press snooze on it for years, drowning it out with busyness, numbing it with distraction, telling yourself you'll deal with it later, once things settle down. The trouble is that things never quite settle down, and the alarm keeps going off.
Each time you ignore the question, it doesn't disappear. It just waits, and it tends to come back a little louder. The restlessness that was a whisper at thirty can become a roar at fifty. The people who suffer most aren't the ones who heard the question. They're the ones who heard it and spent decades pretending they hadn't.
You don't have to have the answer today. That's not what the question is asking of you. It's only asking you to stop pressing snooze, to turn toward it instead of away, to admit that it's real and that it matters. That single act of turning toward it is the beginning of everything that follows in this book.
A Question, Not a Crisis
It helps to remember that asking what you're here for isn't a sign that something has gone wrong. It's a sign that something is working. The question is evidence of a mind awake enough to wonder, a heart alive enough to want more than mere survival. Plenty of people never ask it at all.
So try to meet the question without dread. You're not in crisis. You're in inquiry. And inquiry, unlike crisis, isn't an emergency to be solved overnight. It's an invitation to pay closer attention to your own life, starting now, with curiosity rather than fear.
That is the end of chapter one.
