Chapter One: The Wealth You Can’t See
Change Your Mind, Change Your Bank Balance
W
E OFTEN THINK of wealth as something external, stacks of cash, shiny cars, private jets, or five-bedroom houses with walk-in wardrobes and kitchen islands the size of football pitches. We look at someone’s outfit, their postcode, or the size of their engagement ring and think, “They’re wealthy.”
But wealth doesn’t begin in the bank. It begins in the brain.
This chapter is about the kind of wealth you can’t see, the beliefs, thoughts, emotional patterns, and subconscious habits that either build fortunes or quietly sabotage them over decades. Because the truth is, before money shows up in your life, mindset does.
If you want lasting financial freedom, you must master the invisible before the visible can follow.
THE MYTH OF “IF I JUST HAD MORE MONEY”
Let’s get one thing clear early on: more money does not fix a broken mindset. If it did, lottery winners wouldn’t go bankrupt within five years (which, by the way, 70% of them do).
You don’t rise to your income, you fall to your belief system.
That’s why someone earning £150,000 a year can be drowning in debt, constantly stressed, and feeling like it’s never enough. And someone earning £30,000 can be living with peace, purpose, and a growing investment account.
So the question is: What beliefs are driving your financial life?
The answer might surprise you.
A REALISATION ON THE 49 BUS
A few years ago, I was riding the 49 through West London after delivering a talk on wealth mindset. I’d just wrapped up a workshop with early-career teachers, and one young man came up afterwards, genuinely frustrated.
He said, “I get it, but I need money now. What’s the point of mindset when I’ve got rent to pay next week and £18 in my account?”
It was a fair question. So I asked him something unexpected: “What would you do with £10,000 right now?”
He rattled off: “Clear the credit card, new phone, treat my mum, maybe go Ibiza.”
“Cool,” I said. “And what would you do if someone gave you £100,000?”
He blinked. “Same thing, just... more of it.”
“Exactly,” I replied. “Which means the mindset stays the same. Only the numbers change.”
He was quiet. I could see the gears turning. Because he realised something important: The money’s not the problem. The way we think about money is.
MEET SAM: A CASE STUDY IN HIDDEN WEALTH
Let me tell you about Sam.
Sam was 34, worked in admin at a mid-sized office, and earned £25,500 a year. She lived in a modest flat in Bristol, shared with a flatmate, and she’d convinced herself she was “just bad with money.”
Her financial life was chaos. She earned enough to survive, but never enough to feel secure. By the 20th of every month, she was living on toast, praying the petrol would last, and avoiding opening her bank app like it was a haunted house.
She wasn’t lazy. She wasn’t stupid. But she was stuck.
A friend dragged her to one of my money mindset events. Sam sat in the back row, arms crossed, sceptical. But when I said, “Your net worth will never grow beyond your self-worth,” she leaned forward slightly.
After the event, she came up and asked if we could talk.
We started working together. And no, I didn’t start her on a budget or tell her to cut lattes. I asked her to do one thing: spend the next seven days writing down every thought she had about money.
By the end of the week, she had two pages full of brutal inner chatter:
“I’ll never earn more than this.”
“Money disappears the second I get it.”
“People like me don’t have savings.”
“I’m not smart enough to invest.”
Here’s the kicker: Sam didn’t even realise she thought these things. That’s how sneaky mindset is, it lives just below the surface, quietly pulling the strings.
We spent the next few weeks replacing each of those beliefs with something better:
“I’m building new skills and earning potential.”
“I’m learning how to manage and multiply my income.”
“Wealth is a skill I can develop.”
The results? Within six months:
Sam started a freelance VA side hustle and added £500/month to her income.
She set up her first emergency fund, £1,000 by month four.
She paid off £2,300 of credit card debt.
And, for the first time in her adult life, she said the words, “I feel good about money.”
And yes, she still had the same job. She didn’t magically earn six figures overnight. She simply stopped working against herself mentally.
WHAT IS A WEALTH MINDSET, REALLY?
Let’s break this down.
A wealth mindset isn’t about always thinking positive or ignoring reality. It’s about developing core beliefs that support financial growth rather than sabotage it.
Here’s what a scarcity mindset sounds like:
“There’s never enough.”
“I’m just not good with money.”
“If I spend less, I’ll be safer.”
“Rich people are greedy.”
“Money changes people for the worse.”
Here’s what a wealth mindset sounds like:
“I can learn the skills to earn, manage, and grow money.”
“Money is a tool, not a master.”
“Abundance is available to me.”
“I am becoming someone who attracts wealth.”
“My value isn’t defined by my past financial mistakes.”
See the difference? One keeps you small. The other opens doors.
THE RETICULAR ACTIVATING SYSTEM: YOUR BRAIN’S FINANCIAL GPS
Let’s get a bit nerdy for a moment. Your brain has a powerful filter called the Reticular Activating System (RAS). It’s like the gatekeeper of your awareness.
Whatever you focus on, your RAS highlights. Ever noticed that when you're thinking of buying a red Mini, suddenly there are red Minis everywhere? That's your RAS at work.
If your internal script says, “I never get ahead,” your brain will filter for proof that that’s true, bills, bad luck, mistakes. But if you train it to look for progress, growth, and opportunity, it will start noticing those instead.
Mindset isn’t woo-woo. It’s biology.
ACTION STEPS: REWIRING YOUR WEALTH BLUEPRINT
Let’s get practical.
1. Belief Audit
For three days, write down every thought you have about money. Don’t edit or judge, just observe.
2. Identify Your Top 5 Limiting Beliefs
What negative phrases pop up the most? These are your current “wealth blockers.”
3. Create Positive Replacements
Flip each limiting belief into an empowering one. Write them in the present tense, e.g. “I am capable of managing money wisely.”
4. Daily Wealth Mindset Practice
Each morning for the next week, say your five new beliefs aloud. You can do it while brushing your teeth, walking the dog, or glaring at traffic.
5. Track Tiny Wins
At the end of each day, jot down one financially positive thing you did or noticed. Even “brought lunch from home” counts. Momentum builds with micro-wins.
JOURNAL PROMPTS
1. What did I learn about money growing up that no longer serves me?
2. How do I feel when I think about becoming wealthy?
3. In what ways am I already rich that aren’t about money?
4. What would change in my life if I truly believed I deserved wealth?
5. What’s one belief I can choose today that moves me closer to financial freedom?
