Chapter One: Recognising Your Fear of Success

The Invisible Barrier You Didn’t Know Was There

You’re ambitious. You’ve got goals, dreams, visions. Maybe you’ve even had moments of real momentum, projects launched, interviews aced, praise received.

And then… you stalled.

You slowed down when it was time to speed up. You changed your mind just before you were meant to say yes. You buried yourself in busywork. You polished the idea, the proposal, the portfolio, until it was so perfect you never released it at all.

Sound familiar?

These are the tell-tale signs of a much less obvious fear: not the fear of failing, but the fear of succeeding.

And if you’ve never named it, it can control your entire life.

The Subtle Signs: Perfectionism, Overthinking, and Self-Sabotage

Fear of success doesn’t always look like fear.

Sometimes, it looks like being incredibly “driven” but never finishing anything.

Sometimes, it looks like endlessly refining a website or product or pitch so that it never quite feels ready.

Sometimes, it looks like turning down speaking opportunities or promotions because “it’s not the right time.”

And sometimes, it looks like waiting until the night before a big deadline to begin… then using the chaos as an excuse for not doing your best.

Let’s unpack these:

Perfectionism is a fear of being exposed. If it’s never finished, it can’t be judged. If it’s “not quite right,” you don’t have to face the implications of people loving it, or you.

Overthinking is the mind’s way of keeping you safe. Spinning in circles burns energy that could otherwise push you forward. If you’re caught up in scenarios, you’re not out there risking expansion.

Last-minute self-sabotage? That’s your subconscious hitting the brakes. When you get too close to the edge of your comfort zone, the alarm bells go off. You do something, anything, to pull yourself back to “safe.”

This is fear of success in camouflage. It doesn’t scream. It whispers.

And unless you know what to look for, you’ll call it something else:

“I’m just being cautious.” “I’m waiting for the right moment.” “I need more clarity.”

But underneath those rational-sounding excuses is something far more powerful.

You’re not scared of failing.

You’re scared of what happens if you actually succeed.

Fear of Failure vs Fear of Success

At first glance, these two fears look similar. Both can cause hesitation. Both can lead to paralysis. Both can keep you from taking bold action.

But they operate very differently under the surface.

Fear of failure is rooted in shame. “What if I try and fall flat on my face?” It’s the fear of humiliation, embarrassment, or rejection.

Fear of success is rooted in identity disruption. “What if I try and it works?” It’s the fear of visibility, pressure, expectation, responsibility, and what success might demand of you.

Let’s say you’re offered a role that doubles your income but also puts you on a public platform.

If you fear failure, you’ll worry you’re not qualified and might mess it up.

If you fear success, you’ll worry you’ll lose your privacy, your friends might resent you, or you’ll be forced to work harder forever.

Fear of success says, “If I win, I might lose everything.”

And so, without knowing it, you find ways to keep the win from ever happening.

“Playing It Safe” Isn’t Always Safe

Fear of success often hides behind the mask of “staying grounded” or “being realistic.”

How often have you told yourself…

“I don’t want to get ahead of myself.”

“Let me make sure I’m fully ready before I commit.”

“I don’t want to be seen as arrogant.”

These sound responsible. Sensible, even.

But sometimes, they’re just fear in disguise.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: your desire to “stay safe” may be keeping you small.

And ironically, that smallness comes at a massive cost, because while fear of success might protect your ego or your comfort in the short term, it slowly chips away at your sense of fulfilment, freedom, and purpose.

It’s like having a powerful engine with the handbrake on. You feel the friction. You sense the potential. But you’re not moving forward, and you’re not sure why.

You Can’t Conquer What You Haven’t Named

Awareness is everything.

Most people never name their fear of success. It doesn’t occur to them that something positive could be frightening. And so, they mislabel it. They think they’re lazy, indecisive, or flaky.

But laziness isn’t your issue. You’re not unmotivated, you’re conflicted.

A part of you wants to rise, expand, shine.

Another part of you wants to hide, shrink, disappear.

When those parts clash, you feel stuck. Confused. Exhausted. You start wondering, “What’s wrong with me?” when in fact, you’re experiencing a very normal inner tug-of-war.

The first step to changing this is naming it.

Say it out loud, even now: “I might be afraid of succeeding.”

See how that feels.

It’s confronting, isn’t it?

But it’s also freeing, because once you’ve named it, you can work with it. You can start to get curious. You can explore the why. And eventually, you can dissolve the fear’s grip on your life.

Story: Leila’s Wake-Up Call

Leila was a 41-year-old coach who had been hovering at the same income level, £50,000 a year, for over five years. She worked hard, got great results for her clients, and received glowing feedback. But every time she tried to scale her business, by launching a group programme or raising her rates, something got in the way.

Her laptop broke right before her webinar. Her son got ill the week her course went live. She “forgot” to send the sales email before her cart closed.

At first, Leila chalked it up to bad luck. But after a pattern emerged, her mentor asked her a powerful question:

“What if all of this isn’t coincidence? What if you’re creating chaos to avoid growth?”

Leila was stunned. But the more she reflected, the more it made sense.

Deep down, she was terrified that if she earned more, she’d outgrow her partner, alienate her friends, or lose the freedom she cherished.

Success, to her subconscious, equalled sacrifice.

So she held herself back. Not consciously, but through small, repeated acts of sabotage.

Once she realised this, everything changed. She did the inner work to rewire her beliefs. She redefined what success meant to her (including keeping her freedom). She put systems in place to hold her expansion.

Six months later, she had her first £20,000 month, and it felt calm, sustainable, and joyful.

But none of that would’ve happened if she hadn’t named her fear.

Awareness was the turning point.

Practical Steps: How to Spot Your Own Fear of Success

So, how do you begin recognising where fear of success is operating in your life?

Start with these reflection prompts:

Where in your life are you hovering at “almost” level? Think about projects, opportunities, income goals, or relationships that feel close, but never quite land. Ask yourself why.

What do you believe might happen if you succeeded? Write without filtering. Would people leave? Would you have to work more? Would you be expected to keep delivering at a high level forever?

When was the last time you pulled back from a big opportunity, and what story did you tell yourself about it? Was it really about timing… or something deeper?

What are your “upper limit” behaviours? Do you procrastinate right before finishing something big? Do you start fights, pick at details, or get “too busy” when things go well?

Once you’ve reflected, don’t judge yourself. Just notice.

This isn’t about blame. It’s about awareness. You’ve been trying to protect yourself in the only way you knew how. But now, you know better.

Now, you can choose differently.

A New Lens

Imagine what might shift if you started seeing every hesitation, delay, or sabotage as a clue, not of weakness, but of fear.

Imagine what might change if, instead of berating yourself for “not doing enough,” you got curious and asked:

“What part of me is afraid of what happens next if I succeed?”

Fear doesn’t mean you’re not ready. It means you’re expanding.

And expansion always brings resistance.

But resistance is not a stop sign. It’s a signal that you’re on the edge of something big.

Takeaway: The Power of Naming

The moment you name your fear of success, you take back control.

No more shrinking without realising. No more staying stuck without knowing why. No more self-sabotage disguised as strategy.

You can’t conquer what you haven’t named.

And now that you’ve named it, your power begins to return.

So let this be your turning point.

Look at your life honestly. Spot the patterns. Own the resistance.

And whisper this to yourself, with compassion and courage:

“I see you, fear. But you don’t get to run the show anymore.”

You were made to rise.

Let’s begin.
