The thaw lifts buried boundary-stones and a broken ring of wards older than Mossmere itself, and the spring planting will not take.

The Greening should be the gentlest festival of the year: the seedbeds blessed, the boundary opened for the season’s first travellers, the village’s growing magic renewed beneath the oak. Instead the planting charms fail. Seedlings sprout, turn toward the boundary, and die. And as the meltwater falls away it leaves carved stones standing in the wet ground, part of a ward-ring that was old before Mossmere was founded.

Marian Ashmore arrives in the middle of it, a travelling scholar-witch following the same buried history from the other end. She holds half the story. Mossmere holds the other half, in an attic full of Ashmore correspondence and in the apothecary line Mira Thorne was born into. Neither side has been honest about the old place, and the village is more frightened of the answer than of the failing harvest — because acknowledging it would mean the land was somebody else’s first.
